Safety Management Systems in the UAS sector: Unlocking complex operations
Safety Management Systems are the route to routine BVLOS. Regulators will not authorise complex operations on airframe assurance alone; they need demonstrable organisational control — hazard identification, risk acceptance, assurance and promotion, evidenced continuously. Under the CAA's LUC, a mature SMS lets operators self-authorise, converting one-off permissions into scalable privileges. For commercial operators that means growth beyond trials; for defence, credible airworthiness arguments and MAA acceptance.
